Profile:
Trevor Baylis was born in 1937 in Kilburn, London and was brought up in Southall during the Blitz. His education was disrupted by the War which led to the failure at the 11+ exam. At the age of 15 however, Trevor was swimming for Great Britain. His first job was at a soil mechanics laboratory in Southall, where a part-time day release programme enabled him to study mechanical and structural engineering at the local technical college.His early career was very diverse: he worked as a stunt man, escapologist, Physical Education Instructor for the Army, and proprietor of his own swimming pool company which successfully installed over 350 pools in schools throughout the UK using his own original design.
Inspired by a television programme on AIDS in Africa he invented the Clockwork Radio, and in 1997 he was awarded an OBE for services to Africa. Always concerned about the neglect of inventors, inventions and intellectual property, he set up Trevor Baylis Brands plc (www.baylisbrands.com ) to help inventors get their products to market. He is also in demand as a public speaker inspiring others to ‘think outside the square.’
What I'm talking about:
Why invent? Art is pleasure, invention’s treasure
I will discuss the difficulties I had in getting my Clockwork Radio taken seriously as a product and the obstacles he faced taking it to market. I will tie this in with the problems many inventors have in bringing their ideas to the attention of others and their attempts at commercial success. I will use history to illustrate the point, discussing individual inventors and the obstacles they encountered.
“I have looked back through history to find out how fellow inventors had been treated and was horrified to see how much talent, research and resource had been wasted by these noble individuals. Over and over again their astounding work had changed all our lives, and yet they had ruined themselves in the process.”
I will discuss the importance of education in the process of invention and believes invention should be taught in schools. Knowledge of patents and methods needed to protect originality are vital, “Chance favours the prepared mind", but I also stress the role that inspiration and imagination play in the process.
I encourage and inspires others to think creatively or ‘outside the box.’
I will conclude this talk with a mention of enthusiasm for the creation of Baylis Brands Ltd., a company I have formed to help inventors take their products to market, and where they can find help and advice, as well as protection.
