Do Events. How to create a World Class event from a cowshed. (London November)

  • Cecil Sharp House 2 Regent's Park Road London, England, NW1 7AY United Kingdom (map)

Cost: £350.00 (incl. VAT)

Have you ever had that crazy idea about doing your own event?

Even just for the most fleeting of moments?

‘It could be this.’ ‘We’d do this.’ ‘But heck, we’d never ever do that’.

And then, phew, thankfully, sanity prevailed.

But, for some, it is an idea that won’t leave them.

Is that you?

I know that feeling, too.

12 years ago, we had an idea.

And the Do Lectures was born.

By rights, we should have failed.

We had never done an event before.

We had no plan.

We had no website.

Just a simple naive hunch that this would be a good thing to do.

And, candidly, the early years were a struggle.

Tough lessons seemed to form an orderly queue at our door. All had their very own salutary piece of wisdom for us.

The only thing we had going for us was an abundant supply of a particular brand of stubbornness. More commonly known as misplaced optimism.

But as each pain-point arrived, we learnt the lesson it wanted to teach us.

Years went by, and ever so gradually we got better at it.

The pursuit of getting better each year seemed exciting. (And, it still does.)

Then all of a sudden people were saying a bunch of nice things about us.

The Do Lectures got on a list of the top ten contemporary events in the world.

A £1.2 billion events company came and wanted to buy us. (We declined.)

The talks slowly got out there. And then now suddenly have had over 100 million views.

Tickets that were hard to sell in the early years, now sell out in a single day.

And interesting things continue to happen each day.

Would we consider doing an Amazon Prime documentary?

Would we consider doing something with Soho House?

Would we consider doing The Do in India? In Spain? In Argentina?

But our biggest gift to the Do Lectures was that we didn’t quit.

And, at the same time, we had this relentless quest that we didn’t just want to be good at this thing.

We want to be the most inspiring event in the world for 150 people.

We can’t do a desert better than Burning Man, we can’t do 100,000 people in Austin better than SXSW.

But we can do an intimate gathering of 150 amazing humans better than almost any other event on the planet.

And trust me, we continue to push. Never settling for where we are.

The odds were against us.

Middle of nowhere.

No big sponsor.

No experience.

No website.

Ignore the odds.

The decision to start The Do lectures has changed our lives. As a family, it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made. The people we have met. The conversations we have had. The community we have been lucky to have joined. We are so grateful.

So, here’s to misplaced optimism.

But, looking back, I would take that optimism and inform it with some lessons learnt the hard way.

That’s why I have persuaded the Do Events team to share our secret sauce, our templates, how we budget, how we approach speakers etc.

So, you can beat the odds, because you have the capabilities that you need.

We get asked this a lot.

How do you do all this?

Where do you even begin?

What systems do you use?

For me, the do exists to help our community and if you want to learn how to do an event, we have some knowledge to share.

So I have asked the team to do a one-day workshop to share all our secret sauce.

To help you avoid the same mistakes as us.

This workshop will show you how to take control of yourself, your work and your time. And how to enjoy the ride.

Why do this course?

Because you want to know how, why, what, and where.

Because you love people.

Because you understand the need for you to do this.

Because you want to help your tribe.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You run events, small and big, but want to go to another level.

  • Yes, a big event can take ideas about defining moments etc and apply it to an event at scale.

  • You are on the cusp of doing an event, but want to learn the finer details.

  • You did an event and it didn’t quite go to plan. But want to get the next one right.

  • You occasionally hold events and are curious to know how to do them better.

This workshop is not for you if:

  • If you want to know how to do a better dinner party, this isn’t for you.

  • If you are planning your wedding, and want a few tricks, this is not for you.

  • If you are only interested in creating an online community, this isn’t for you.

  • If you are only interested in events just to make money, this isn’t for you.

  • If you are not answering a true need that you have and you think your community have, this isn’t for you.

You will learn:

  • How to truly understand why you want to do it? (It may be different to what you currently think.)

  • Why rules can make it more fun?

  • Why purpose and meaning matters to your event?

  • The importance of being for something.

  • How to be clear on what need you seek to answer?

  • The importance of venue.

  • Know who is it for? Know who it is not for?

  • How to create a safe space for transformative experience?

  • How to turn your weaknesses into strengths?

  • How to not fall flat?

  • How to prime your community for change?

  • Learn what details don’t matter? And which ones that do?

  • How to build an engaged community?

  • How to do a budget?

  • How to approach speakers?

  • How to dress an event?

  • The importance of awkwardness? Why uncomfortableness creates magic.

  • How to create defining moments?

  • How to create desire to attend?

  • How to sell tickets?

  • How to curate a set of talks?

  • How to do a release form for speakers?

  • How to understand the importance of song, fire and the best coffee.

  • Learn the importance of the start and how to shape the event at the beginning.

  • Learn how to finish well.

  • The importance of saying thank you.

  • And, so much more.

Expect to:

It’s going to be a full day.

There are 12 years of learning to share in just one day.

You will walk away with more that just inspiration. You will have practical little series of templates that will give you real examples. So, you will know how to write to a potential speaker, how to sell the event.

You will have a template for a budget.

You will have examples of our process and procedures.

This course is very practical. Not just a fine dose of motivation.

It will be that too.
